Portia Lee James DeGeneres (also also known as Portia de Rossi) is a popular Australian and American actor, model and an philanthropist. In the year 15 she legally changed her name, adopting her Italian nickname "de Rossi" that was fashionable. She adopted the name "Portia" of Shakespeare's performance of The Merchant of Venice. Portia declares that it is the bravest thing she's done. The struggle she had with her sexuality drove her to switch names. She began her career in Hollywood by appearing in the romantic drama "Sirens.' She starred alongside Hugh Grant. She also appeared in several American TV shows and films such as Too Something, Nick Freno, Licensed Teacher, Arrested Development, as well as, Better Off Ted. She became famous for her role in the role of a Boston-based lawyer named Nelle Porter, in a drama series on TV called Ally McBeal. Her character was the main comic relief.
